Quintin Harlan: Coaches called on to promote

In today’s game, coaches have to be everything from psychiatrists, to surrogate parents, nutritionists, travel agents, camp counselors and, apparently, promoters. Dropping attendance figures at high school sporting events are nothing new. New ideas to get people into the gyms and supporting the teams are about a dime a dozen.

George Bremer: Hoops season is now here

Sure, the NBA has been under way for about a month, and college basketball got started in earnest last week. Girls high school basketball also has been humming along for a couple of weeks. But this week truly feels like the start of the basketball season to me.

Rick Bramwell: Deer season off to disappointing start

Opening day of the whitetail deer gun season makes me feel 10 years younger. I’ve watched the sun come up on 49 seasons straight. For years, I hunted Jefferson County but now hunt close to home.

Somewhere in the future, race fans will sit back in an easy chair relating to a younger generation how they watched one of the best drivers in stock car history in action.

Ken de la Bastide: USSA to conduct 15 events

For the past few years DK Promotions has been conducting competition for several USAC midget divisions in the Midwest, but that will all be changed in 2010.
Quintin Harlan: Where were you when ...

How many times have you heard this: “You will always remember where you were when …” In my parent’ generation, that’s the line for the date Nov. 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. In more modern terms, the date that’s forever etched in our memories is Sept. 11, 2001.

George Bremer: Would of, should of, could of

It’s been a season of what-ifs for Indiana’s major college football teams. The questions started for Ball State shortly after the Cardinals’ historic 12-2 2008 season came to an end. What if head coach Brady Hoke and star quarterback Nate Davis had stuck around for another year? We do know the Cardinals, under Stan Parrish, are 1-8.

Quintin Harlan: Rare shot for Scots tonight

We’ve all heard messages throughout our lives about how one should take advantage of opportunities when they are presented. We should “strike while the iron is hot” or “be ready to answer the door when opportunity knocks” and on and on and on. Tonight the Highland Scots have an opportunity that only two other football teams in Highland’s 55-year history have had.

Rick Teverbaugh: Girls set to begin hoops season

In a way it doesn’t seem possible. But after a Sunday meeting with the county’s girls basketball coaches it became all too real. Girls basketball starts for real on Monday, and that’s the same day that the boys teams can begin practice.Actually none of our area teams actually begin Monday, but there’s two games on Tuesday.
