ANDERSON — The Highland Scots picked up another victory over the Anderson Indians in the crosstown wrestling series with a 49-27 decision at Robert E. Fuller Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Unlike recent meetings between the two schools, this year’s match had just two forfeits — one for each team — to go with eight combined pinfall victories.

Anderson’s lone forfeit victory came at 112 pounds. The Scots received their forfeit win at 189 pounds.

“We tried to match up where we could,” said Anderson coach Matt Goen. “We had a pretty good night; we had a lot of freshmen and sophomores and they wrestled well.”

“It’s great. No doubt Coach Goen is doing great things with his program,” said Scots coach Kyle Poyer. “We’ve got some youth in some spots. It’ll be great to have more competitive matches against Anderson.”

The night began with the Scots taking the first two matches by fall. Zach Scott pinned Todd Shellenbarger at the 3:24 mark of their 125-pound bout. Jordan McCool got a victory by fall at 2:54 against Bryant Thomas at 130 pounds.

The Indians got on the scoreboard when Mike Achenbach pinned Ryan Warner at 2:52 of the 135-pound match to cut the score to 12-6 in Highland’s favor.

Mason Berryman started a streak of three straight wins for the Scots when he defeated Brady Gilliam at 140 pounds. The Scots’ returning state finalist won by fall at 3:49 of the bout.

Highland’s T.J. Scott picked up a major decision victory at 145 pounds.

The Scots’ Sam Bennett — another returning state finalist — was another victor by fall. The Northern Illinois recruit pinned Kollin Newcomb at the 3:57 mark.

Dylan Gregg and Zach Sylvester gave the Indians back-to-back victories at 160 and 171 pounds, respectively. Gregg won his bout by technical fall with a final score of 19-4. Sylvester beat Randy Joyce-Kirkland by major decision with a 14-6 final score.

After an Anderson forfeit at 189, the Tribe got a pinfall win at 215 pounds when Tommie Larkin was able to put Coby Duggar’s shoulders down at the 2:38 mark.

That victory made the score 40-21 heading into the final four matches.

Scots freshman Shawn Warner pinned Anderson’s Nick Cleaveland at the 1:23 mark of the first period to make the score 46-21 in favor of the home team.

From there Highland’s Ben Branson and Aaron Franklin sandwiched wins at 103 and 119 pounds around a forfeit win for the Indians at 112 pounds.
