Fort Wayne South 72, Highland 65

FORT WAYNE — Fort Wayne South Side sophomore and Purdue recruit Raphael Davis scored 29 points in leading the host Archers to a 71-65 victory over Anderson Highland on Wednesday at Don Reichert Gymnasium.

The Scots (0-1) could point to a rough night at the free-throw line as a primary reason for the season-opening defeat, going just 8-of-19.

Senior post Brandon Newsom paced Highland with 17 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Brogan Gary, son of Highland graduate and Indiana All-Star Mark Gary, added 12 in his varsity debut.

The Scots took a 51-49 advantage into a frenetic fourth quarter that saw six lead changes and two ties. Earlie Ivey went 1-of-2 from the foul line with 1 minute, 26 seconds remaining to forge a 65-65 score.

Archer senior Greg Johnson would respond with a three-pointer with 1:11 left, giving the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.

Davis made his biggest mark on the stat sheet via free throws, connecting on 13-of-14 attempts. That included a pair of charity tosses with 30.6 seconds remaining to extend the South Side lead to 70-65.

Highland trailed 20-15 after one quarter and 32-31 at halftime. The Scots’ biggest lead stood at seven points, as Blane Crouse found Newsom for a layup with 5:12 left in the third quarter for a 42-35 lead.

Mount Vernon 68, Lapel 39

FORTVILLE — The Mount Vernon Marauders, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, showed an aggressive defense in defeating the Lapel Bulldogs 68-39.

Lapel trailed 13-12 midway through the first quarter before turnovers and poor shooting led to an eight-minute drought.

Mount Vernon went on a 18-0 run to lead 31-12.
