NEW CASTLE — Nathan Walters ran for 193 yards on 23 attempts and scored three touchdowns Friday as the Highland football team rolled over New Castle 41-14 at Huffman Field.

Highland has scored 41 points in each of its games this season. Last week, the Scots defeated crosstown rival Anderson, 41-12.

Walters led a Highland ground attack that racked up 238 rushing yards. The Scots had 384 yards of total offense to New Castle’s 167.

The Trojans struck first in the game as Derek Blevins put the home team up 7-0 with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter. That 7-0 lead would hold until Walters scored his first touchdown of the night on a 6-yard run to cap off a 12-play, 83-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes of game time between the end of the first quarter and the first half of the second quarter.

“We had some trouble with (New Castle) in the first half,” Highland coach Randy Albano said. “But, from the start of the second quarter on, Nathan ran the ball harder than I’ve ever seen.”

The Scots would score again with six seconds left in the first half. Highland marched the ball 80 yards in 4:59 before Kaleb Ogden hooked up with Taylor Hopkins for a 29-yard scoring strike. Walters ran for 19 yards in the drive, and Ogden completed four of his last five passes in the series.

On the scoring play, Hopkins ran an inside route, turned upfield and covered the last three yards through the air as he dived over the goal line for the touchdown and destroyed any possible momentum that New Castle may have had.

“That play demoralized them,” Albano said. “We work a lot on the two-minute drill, and tonight was a good example of what we’ve been doing in practice with it.”

The Scots scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to build a 34-7 lead.

Walters scored on runs of 1 and 37 yards. Wideout Derrick Hill found the end zone on an 18-yard pass from Ogden.

For the night, Ogden completed 11 of 19 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Highland backup quarterback Brad Kinred scored the final Highland touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 4:02 remaining in the game.

Hill led the Scots receiving corps with three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Highland (2-0) will take a couple days off before returning to practice Tuesday to begin preparations for its road trip to Spencer to take on Owen Valley.

“When we have a good night and it shows on the scoreboard, I have no problem giving them a couple days off,” Albano said.
