AREA ROUNDUP: Shenandoah nabs thirds straight tennis sectional

NEW CASTLE — Shenandoah’s girls tennis team won its third straight sectional title, and seventh in school history, Saturday with a methodical 5-0 win over Blue River for the New Castle Sectional crown.
The Raiders’ Lauren Wilson dominated her No. 1 singles match, winning, 6-0, 6-0. Mariah Smith won at No. 2 singles for Shenandoah, 6-0, 6-2, while Kelly Ray won by a 6-3, 6-2 margin at No. 3 singles.
Alyssa Bennett and Cassidy Miller teamed up for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles for the Raiders, while Brittany Webber and Morgan Dilling took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Shenandoah will play the Richmond Sectional champion in the second game of the Richmond Regional on Tuesday.

Marion Sectional
Marion 5, Madison-Grant 0
The Argylls’ season ended with a 4-12 record after Saturday’s Marion Sectional championship match against the host and defending regional champion Giants.

Baseball
Anderson 5-7, Huntington North 6-6
The Indians remained at .500 in North Central Conference play and ran their overall record to 15-8 with a doubleheder split with the Vikings in which both games went nine innings.
Huntington North took the first game, 6-5. Nolan Earley and Daniel Puckett each drove in two runs for the Tribe, while Tyler Campbell went 2-for-3.
Zachary Bucci drove in the game-winning run in the second game with a ninth-inning single for Anderson. Jake Vicars went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, while Zach Gooding went 3-for-5.

Liberty Christian 8-18, Ind. Washington 1-11
The Lions improved their season mark to 8-10 after a stout weekend sweep over Indianapolis Washington. Class 1A Liberty Christian vanquished the Class 3A Continentals 8-1 in the first game. In the encore, the Lions’ bats erupted for 17 hits for an 18-11 win.
Tim Zeigler collected a one-hit complete-game victory in the first contest, striking out 11, walking four and allowing one earned run. Zeigler also added a solo home run. He concluded the day 5-for-7 with four doubles.
Joe Huff hit a solo blast and recorded the win in the second game. Cam DeFur went 5-for-9 with a double.

Henry County Tournament
Shenandoah 5, Knightstown 0
Tri 3, Shenandoah 2
The Class 2A Raiders nearly captured the Henry County championship, but a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh gave Class 1A Tri a narrow 3-2 win.
In the tournament opener, Shenandoah blanked White River Athletic Conference foe Class 2A Knightstown 5-0.
Clayton Phipps (4-1) recorded the win, striking out nine while scattering three hits. Jerrod Moore (2-5) suffered the tough loss in the second game despite striking out eight.
The Raiders are 6-11 on the year.

Daleville 7-4, Muncie Burris 4-5
The Class 1A Broncos split against Class 2A Muncie Burris on the road to improve their record to 15-8.
The ninth-ranked Broncos cruised to a 7-4 win in the first game before losing hold of the second behind a walk-off bottom of the seventh.
Zach Tumulty recorded the win in the first game as the offense provided 14 hits. On the day, Tyler Phillips hit a home run and a double, with Cody Walters, Jordan Rench and Griffin Corn also logging doubles. Tumulty and Corn both swiped two bases.

Softball
Shenandoah 6-10, Lapel 4-0
The visiting Raiders clinched the White River Athletic Conference championship with the doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs.
Yardley Collett tossed a pair of complete games, combining for 11 strikeouts and just one walk for the Raiders. Ashlyn Thomas went 4-for-4 in the first game, while Tiffany Stoker and Amanda Hensley each went 2-for-4 for Shenandoah. Katelynn Ash hit a home run for Lapel (12-14).
Stoker hit her first career home run in the second game for Shenandoah (14-12, 7-1 WRAC), which scored all 10 of its runs in the first two innings. Collett and Stacy Kinnett each went 2-for-3 with a double, while Mackenzie Williams was 2-for-2 with four RBIs.

Pendleton Heights 9, Decatur Central 4
The Class 4A No. 6 Arabians used a seven-run fourth inning to end regular-season play at 23-5.
Erin Falkenberry hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-4, while Casey Jamerson was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ashley Warrum was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Lindsey Beisser pitched the first four innings, striking out four batters.

Anderson 12, Liberty Christian 1
The Class 4A Indians grabbed a quick 7-0 lead after two innings and four frames later sealed a 12-1 victory over city rival Class 1A Liberty Christian.
Johnna Rebenack pitched the Indians to victory, logging eight strikeouts and no walks. She added a double with Erica Couch credited for a home run, a double and three RBIs. Whitney Bryan had two doubles. Chrissy finished with three hits and a double. Morgan Jarvis drove in two runs, and Kristen Couch had a triple.
The Indians improved to 12-11 on the year. Liberty Christian’s season mark dropped to 9-10.

Golf
WRAC Invitational
The Lapel Bulldogs wrapped up the team title and had three golfers earn all-conference honors at the Royal Highlands during the White River Athletic Conference Invitational.
Brody Williams shot a 73 for medalist honors while Mason Lloyd and Brock Forrer joined him on the All-WRAC team.
Lloyd shot an 85 with Forrer posting an 82. Seth Bays added a 92 and Dylan Crosley totaled an 88.
Lapel combined for a score of 325. Eastern Hancock (363) was runner-up. Knightstown (369) finished third just ahead of fourth-place Shenandoah (372). Wes-Del (421) was fifth.
The Bulldogs improve their record to 7-2-1.
