Friday area roundup: M-G softball clinches CIC share

GAS CITY — The Madison-Grant softball team defeated Mississinewa 1-0 in eight innings Friday to finish the season with a 6-1 record in the Central Indiana Conference, earning its share of a three-way split of the league title with Alexandria and Frankton.
Dana Runyan, who was 2-for-3 batting on the day, led off the top of the eighth with a double. She was lifted for pinch runner Christine DuPouy.
Keisha Head then laced the game-winning RBI single to right field for her only hit of the game, to score DuPouy with the game winning RBI single to right field.
Kendra Stitt and Sam Yeagy were each 1-for-3 at the bat for Madison-Grant.
The Argyll’s Sara Webster pitched all eight innings to up her record to 15-2 on the season. The MG junior yielded only two hits in the win while retiring 13 Indian batters on strikes.
The Argylls, who end the regular season at 21-3 overall, will open sectional play at 6 p.m. Monday at Eastern High School.
They’ll take on the host Eastern Comets in the first round of tournament play.

Shenandoah 5, Wes-Del 0
MIDDLETOWN — Yardley Collett and Mary Spiker each had a double for the host Raiders as they defeated their White River Athletic Conference rivals.
Collett pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks as Shenandoah improved its league mark to 5-1.
The Raiders (12-12) will travel to Lapel today for a key WRAC doubleheader.

Eastern (Greentown) 2, Elwood 0 (9 innings)
The visiting Comets got a 2-run homer in the top of the ninth to down the host Panthers (7-14).
Tiffany Stephens was 2-4 at the plate for the Panthers.
Elwood will play Fishers in round one of the Mount Vernon Invitational at 10 a.m. today.

Tennis
Marion Sectional
Madison-Grant 3, Blackford 2
The Argylls advanced to today’s 10 a.m. championship match of the Marion Sectional with the host Giants with the win over the Bruins.
Argylls No. 2 player Jessica Petro, who came into the sectional semifinal match with an 0-16 record on the season, was the deciding point for Madison-Grant as she won in three sets over the Bruins’ Emily Smith 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Madison-Grant picked up its other two points at No. 3 singles as Angle-Lynn Robinson won 6-2, 6-2 over Kristie Ridgeway and No. 1 doubles, as the combo of Steffanie Powell and Lindsey Hutson were 6-3, 6-1 winners over Kristen Waters and Stacy Enyart.

New Castle Sectional
Shenandoah 5, New Castle 0
The Raiders knocked out the host Trojans 5-0 in the semifinal round of sectional action.
The Raiders would only drop one set, a 6-2 loss in the first set at No. 1 doubles.

Mount Vernon Sectional
FORTVILLE — Lapel fell to the host Mount Vernon Marauders 3-2 in the bye round of the 2008 sectional.
Lapel’s No. 1 and 2 singles players, Jill and Jo Jo Gentry, picked up the two Bulldog wins. Jill Gentry was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Mallory Owens at No. 1.
Jo Jo Gentry defeated Maria Khokhar 6-4, 6-2.
The Bulldogs end their season with a 3-12 record.

Baseball
Anderson 11, Muncie Central 0
The Indians downed their North Central Conference rivals in five innings at Memorial Field.
Dustin Cannon picked up his third win of the season with a 3-hit shutout performance on 64 pitches.
Zach Gooding was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Blake Wilson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jake Vicars and Nolan Earley were both 1-for-2 with Vicars scoring three times and Earley driving in three runs.
Anderson (14-7 and 5-5 in the NCC) travels to conference foe Huntington North today for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

Highland 19, Northeastern 2
The Scots evened their record at 11-11 with a drubbing of Northeastern at Raven Park on the campus of Anderson University.
Brad Kindred, Chase Freeman, Joey Hart and Spencer Benge were all 2-for-3 for the Scots at the plate. Taylor Hopkins was 2 for 4.
Highland will return to Raven Park on Monday when it plays the Elwood Panthers at 5 p.m.
