AREA ROUNDUP: Argylls win in 16 innings
Madison-Grant claimed the softball championship of the Blackford Invitational by surviving a 16-inning marathon in the title game against the host Bruins.
The Argylls (18-3) were the first team on the board in the game with a pair of runs in the top of the final inning. Kendra Stitt singled and stole second base. Shelby Wells singled to drive in Stitt for what would prove to be the winning run. Wells went to second on the throw home and Sam Fields singled her in with an insurance run.
Sara Webster pitched the final 13 innings of shutout ball to get the win. It was win No. 13 of the season.
Blackford 2, Highland 0
Highland 5, Delta 2
In the opening game for the Scots at Blackford, they managed six hits but no runs. Katie Lee suffered the loss despite not giving up any earned runs.
Six Highland players had one single apiece.
In the second contest, Highland got two hits apiece from Jessica Jones, Jarah Ice and Kayla Byrne. Lee gave up two earned runs but got the win. The Scots are 17-6 on the season.
Alexandria 4-0, Mississinewa 0-7
Sarah Almack limited the Indians to five hits in the opening-game shutout and had a single of her own. She struck out seven and walked nobody.
Adrea DiRuzza contributed a double for Alexandria.
In the second game, catcher Kylie Bischof had two of the Tigers’ four hits. Alexandria is 15-9 overall and 5-1 in the Central Indiana Conference. The Tigers can lock up a share of the league title by defeating Blackford on Monday.
