ANDERSON — Two days removed from picking up its first Madison County Tournament title in five years, the Highland boys golf team maintained its momentum with a 322-361 victory over city rival Anderson on Monday.
The Scots warmed up for today’s match at Killbuck Golf Club against 16th-ranked North Central with Austin Stagman and Brandon Selig sharing medalist honors with a 79.
Andrew Hanna and Trey Knight came through with scores of 80 and 84, respectively, for Highland (5-3).
For Anderson (3-8), Spencer Morris and Patrick Freeman both shot 87. Eric Elpers carded a 90 and Austin Amos a 97.
Covenant Christian 328, Heritage Christian 341, Liberty Christian 351
Liberty Christian junior Alex Stinson, fresh off of his second consecutive Madison County Tournament medalist performance, blistered South Grove Golf Course to the tune of a 2-under-par 68.
It wasn’t enough, however, as the Lions were third in a three-way meet with Covenant Christian and Heritage Christian. Other scores for LC were Evan Gibson’s 80, Joel Girt with a 93 and Scott Baker’s 110.
Pendleton Heights 156, Shenandoah 194
Freshman Jake Groninger picked up medalist honors with a 37 to lead the Arabians at Valley View Golf Course.
Tyler White and Brian Stanley carded 39s for Pendleton Heights (6-4), while Blake Stephenson shot 41 and Michael Maxwell a 44.
Girls tennis
Highland 4, Frankton 1
The 14th-ranked Scots improved to a perfect 18-0 with a Wednesday date at Delta next on the horizon.
The Scots impressed in doubles competition, as both the teams of Kelsey McFadden and Ashlan Allison and Emily Jones and Michaela Hammel posted victories.
Alex Hammel won No. 1 singles and Abby Beard No. 3 for Highland. Anna Neese secured the lone point for the Eagles (7-3) with a victory at No. 2 singles.
Shenandoah 4, Muncie South 1
The Raiders defeated the Rebels as Lauren Wilson, Mariah Smith and Kelly Ray all recorded straight-set victories for Shenandoah. In doubles, the No. 2 team of Brittany Webber and Emily Vetor posted a win.
Softball
Alexandria 3, Taylor 0
The host Tigers improved to 12-8 thanks largely to Erin England and Joni Dent, both of whom produced two hits. Brooke Sayre added a double for Alexandria.
Pendleton Heights 12, Delta 2
The Arabians came through with at least one run in every inning except for one to move to 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference and 20-5 overall.
Shonda Garringer smacked three hits for Pendleton Heights and scored a pair of runs, while Erin Falkenberry belted two home runs and drove in four runs. Halee Meyers had two hits and scored twice.
Yorktown 6, Elwood 1
The visiting Panthers lost at Yorktown, but senior Kelsey Whitson led Elwood (5-8) with a double that drove home her team’s only run.
Lapel 8, Wapahani 4
The visiting Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to improve to 8-10.
Overall, the Bulldogs came through with 10 hits, four from the bat of Leigh Murphy and two apiece courtesy of Kayleigh Schroeder and Kaylee O’Dell.
Daleville 6, Liberty Christian 2
Host Daleville plated five runs in the third inning and used Kristen Church’s home run to improve to 4-9.
Carson Corn and Trina Morgan also had hits for the Broncos (4-9). For the Lions, Kate Driskell delivered a home run.
Mount Vernon 4, Highland 0
The Scots produced seven hits, but failed to score a run while losing at home.
Jarah Ice was solid in defeat for Highland (16-5) with three hits and Jessica Jones had two. All of Mount Vernon’s runs came in the second inning.
Shenandoah 8-10, Eastern Hancock 0-6
The visiting Raiders generated seven runs in the top of the fifth inning in the opener and rallied to win the nightcap.
Mary Spiker had two base hits, including a double, in Game 1. Freshman Yardley Collett came through with three hits, including two doubles, to lead Shenandoah (9-10) in the second game. Stacy Kinnett had two hits in Game 2.
Baseball
Highland 5, Madison-Grant 4
Joey Hart, Brad Kindred and Chandler Sidwell all had two hits for the Scots, who upped their season record to 7-9.
Junior pitcher Kaleb Ogden went the distance for Highland, allowing eight base hits.
Anderson 15, Alexandria 5
The visiting Indians established the tone early with seven runs in the first inning en route to moving to 11-6.
Senior Jake Vicars had two hits and two runs for Anderson, while Zach Bucci’s bat was responsible for two hits and three RBIs. Jeremy Nave also had two hits and drove in two for the Indians.
Girls track & field
Tipton 93, Elwood 23
Sophomore Marisol Salinas won the 100 hurdles in 17.6 seconds and also took first in the 100-meter dash (13.6 seconds) and the shot put (25 feet, 3 inches) for Elwood.
Boys track & field
Tipton 102, Elwood 21
The Panthers failed to win any events, but did receive red-ribbon efforts from Denton Collier in the 100-meter hurdles and Kevin Horseman in the 400.
