Saturday's area roundup: Scots softball clinches OAC

CONNERSVILLE — Junior pitcher Lauren Williamson pitched a perfect game for the Highland softball team Saturday as the Scots swept a doubleheader from Connersville to wrap up the Olympic Athletic Conference title.
In a 3-0 victory in Game 2, Williamson allowed no hits or walks and recorded 19 strikeouts. Katie Lee was 3-for-3 at the plate for Highland (16-4), which is now 5-1 in OAC play.
Game 1 saw the visiting Scots pound out 14 base hits and Lee take care of the pitching chores, allowing five hits and striking out seven Connersville batters while not allowing a walk in a 12-4 romp.
Catcher Jarah Ice and Krista Davis were both 3-for-4 at the plate for Highland, while Lee and shortstop Stormy Holder both notched two hits.
“Our girls came out really focused to carry on the tradition of HHS softball in the conference,” said Scots coach Doug Holder. “Every girl played with passion.”

Pendleton Heights 8, Shelbyville 4
Ashley Warrum collected three hits and scored three runs and Casey Jamerson, Shonda Garringer and Stephanie Robinson delivered two hits apiece for the visiting Arabians.
Senior Lindsey Beisser struck out nine Golden Bears batters to pick up the win for Pendleton Heights, now 18-5 overall and 4-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings. Beisser also blasted a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.

Liberty Christian 2-1, Westfield 1-10
Sophomore pitcher Karon Earley scattered two hits and struck out 10 Shamrocks in the process as the visiting Lions took Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Big hitters for LC were Lauryn Russell with a two-run double, Kate Driskell with three hits and Hannah Whitaker with a double.
Liberty Christian lost the nightcap, 10-1, to fall to 6-8.

Frankton 2-2, Mississinewa 1-3
Junior Sami Green struck out nine Ole Miss batters to lead the visiting Eagles to the victory in Game 1.
Mollie Hamilton’s triple and an RBI fielder’s choice from Lauren Hendricks were important cogs in the win. Frankton lost the nightcap in eight innings despite Bre Shively striking out six for the Eagles (11-6).
Shively also added two hits, as did Allison Parr.

Baseball
Alexandria 10-2, Guerin Catholic 2-4
Sophomore pitcher Drew Overman struck out 10 batters for the Tigers in their Game 1 win against host Guerin Catholic.
Hitting stars for Alexandria (4-10) included Kaleb Tatman and Cory Smith, both of whom were 2-for-3. Jordan Baker finished 2-of-4 and freshman catcher Nick Parkison grooved a two-run homer in the seventh inning.
Parkison delivered a solo shot in Game 2, but it wasn’t enough as the home team won, 4-2. Chance Morphew finished 2-for-2 at the plate for Alexandria.

Daleville 5-16, Tri 3-3
The host and Class A No. 9 Broncos won a close one in Game 1 and by a landslide in Game 2 against Tri.
Senior Andy Good pitched a complete game in the opener, permitting four hits and striking out 10. Good also was 2-for-3 with a double to lead Daleville offensively. Senior Jordan Rench also had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
An eight-run first frame and seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth put the second game away for the Broncos in five innings. Jarrod Kaelin produced a home run for Daleville, while senior Jake Hensley scored two runs and parked a home run of his own.

Shenandoah 8-0, Eastern Hancock 0-4
Brandon Barnell had two hits and three RBIs for the host Raiders in their Game 1 shutout of the Royals. Senior Danny Johns picked up with win by allowing only four hits.
Shenandoah (4-7) was able to produce only one hit in the second game, that coming on a Barnell single.

Girls tennis
Scots win OAC Tournament
Not only did 14th-ranked Highland (17-0) defend its own turf in capturing the Olympic Athletic Conference championship, but it did so in convincing fashion with 5-0 conquests of Connersville, Jay County and Muncie South.
Alex Hammel, Mercy Scott and Abby Beard all posted three straight-set triumphs for the Scots in singles competition, as did Highland’s No. 1 doubles team of Ashlan Allison and Kelsey McFadden.
Three combinations took care of business at No. 2 doubles. Against Connersville, it was Emily Jones and Alania Coplin, while Jones teamed with Michaela Hammel against Jay County. In the win against Muncie South, Coplin and Hammel posted the win.

TRACK & FIELD
Anderson competes in NCCmeet
The annual North Central Conference Meet took place at Marion High School with Huntington North winning the girls title and the host Giants claiming supremacy in the boys meet.
Anderson’s girls finished eighth with junior Jasmine McGhee placing second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100 for the Indians.
The AHS boys placed seventh in the standings. Senior sprinter Justin Fuller took third in the 200 and teamed with Roshawn Nunn, Adam Morris and Daryl Watkins in the third-place 400-meter relay team.

Baseball
AU 13-6, Bluffton 0-3
The Ravens swept Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Bluffton, keeping alive the Ravens’ hopes of making the HCAC postseason tournament.
The Ravens trail Transylvania by one game for the final spot in the four-team field with one game remaining. An AU victory at Bluffton today combined with a Pioneer loss to Rose-Hulman would clinch a spot in the tournament.
In the first game, Pendleton Heights graduate Brad Schnepp tossed a four-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven to earn his third victory of the season. Schnepp also had two hits and two RBIs, including his first career home run at the plate.
Anderson High School graduate Stephen Jones led the Raven offense with three hits, two runs and an RBI, including a home run. Eric Smith also had three hits, two runs and two RBIs, including a double and Chris Jarrett had two hits, two runs and four RBIs, including a grand slam.
Madison-Grant graduate Daniel Hiatt had two hits, three RBIs and Cody Young added two hits.
In the second game, Hiatt led the Ravens with three hits, two runs and three RBIs, including a triple and a home run. Schnepp had three more hits and an RBI.
Smith had two hits, two runs and Lapel graduate Brad Lantz added an RBI double. Lapel graduate David Addington had the Ravens 34th triple and scored a run.
Kyle Dillon earned the victory on the mound, allowing four hits and one earned run in 7.1 innings of work, walking one and striking out eight. AHS graduate Brandon Meadows pitched a shutout inning of relief and Smith got the final two outs of the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
AU is now 23-14 overall and 13-8 in the HCAC. Today’s game will be carried live on the Internet broadcast at 4:30 p.m.
Local boxing Jones wins twice
Javar Jones, 15, a Highland sophomore, defeated Alex Newton in a 3-0 decision over the weekend in a match at Terre Haute. The win came three weeks after an April 3 win in the Golden Gloves Championship at Indianapolis.
Jones, who competes in the 112-pound weight class, trains at Zion Baptist Church in Anderson for God’s Warriors, a boxing club within the church.

Men’s golf
Ravens third at HCAC meet
AU took third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday at Chestnut Hills Golf Course in Fort Wayne.
Tyler Daniels led the Ravens with a four-day total of 72-74-84-77—307, and was the runner-up individually.
Other AU finishers were Scott Schomburg (80-75-87-93—335), Nathan Criswell (80-79-77-83—319), Lance Ramsey (84-77-84-90—335) and Justin Lane (80-84-96-84—344).
Transylvania led the field with a total of 1216, followed by Franklin (1277) and Anderson (1283).
