ANDERSON — Bob Stecher pays $14.99 a month for live Internet access to Major League Baseball competition, but it’s the Toronto Blue Jays he specifically targets.

The wonders of modern technology enable Stecher, the baseball coach at Highland High School from 1968-2001, the opportunity to study the progress of former Scots standout Adam Lind, Toronto’s left fielder.

Who said success doesn’t come without a price?

Certainly not Lind, who through equal parts hard work and persistence earned himself another trip to the big leagues.

Saturday, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Lind was called up by the Blue Jays after starting the season at Triple-A Syracuse, where in 17 games he hit a blistering .356 with 15 RBIs and a .423 on-base percentage.

“It makes me very proud when Adam is called up. It’s quite a feeling when you see one of your players out there,” said Stecher, who coached Lind at Highland. “That’s the way the game is played. It’s a business.”

The Blue Jays are in the business of winning games, which they finally did Sunday at Kansas City, a victory that snapped a six-game losing streak.

In need of an offensive jolt after scoring a total of 15 runs in the five losses before Lind’s arrival, the Blue Jays elected to insert Lind and another Indiana product, Jasper’s Scott Rolen, a third baseman, into the daily equation.

And just in time. Toronto opens a three-game series at defending World Series champion Boston tonight before returning home Friday for a four-game stretch against the Chicago White Sox.

Lind enters the Fenway Park batter’s box this evening hitless following an 0-for-7 performance in two games at Kansas City.

“Adam knows he has to produce. That he has to get down to business,” said Al Lind, Adam’s father. “He’s 0-for-7, but he is hitting the ball hard. It’s just a matter of time and of finding the holes.”

Multiple phone messages left to Adam Lind on Monday were not returned in time for publication.

Only 24, Lind has been down this road before. Three other times, in fact, with the first call to the bigs late in the 2006 season.

Last season he hit 11 homers in 89 games for Toronto, the most for a Blue Jays rookie since 2002. Highlights included a three-run performance at Boston last April and a five-RBI game against Tampa Bay in June.

Word he was being called up to Toronto reached Adam shortly after he had finished batting practice before last Friday’s game at Pawtucket.
