So far this softball season Marian College freshman Mallory Ortwein shows very little sign of cooling off at the plate.
The Anderson High School product has started and played in all but five of her team’s first 40 games. The Knights have amassed a 26-14 record.
Ortwein is hitting .333 with a .495 slugging percentage and a .410 on-base percentage. She has seven doubles, three home runs and 24 RBIs. In a 2-1 win Tuesday over Taylor, Ortwein had her team’s first hit and scored the game’s first run.
Another Anderson High School freshman is excelling in a different sport.
Tyson Taylor continues to pile up points for the Vincennes track and field team.
At last weekend’s Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet, Taylor managed a pair of runner-up finishes and a fifth-place finish. Taylor cleared 6 feet 4 inches for second in the high jump. He was also second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.96, which was just .17 behind the winner.
Taylor’s fifth-place showing came in the long jump where he had a leap of 21 feet 2 inches.
Pendleton Heights sophomore Jeremy Etchison remains unbeaten on the mound for the Vincennes baseball team.
He has a 3.55 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 21.2 innings.
A pair of Anderson High School products are having stellar seasons for the Anderson University softball team.
Kelly Thompson, a senior, has a deceiving 7-8 record but her ERA is a sparkling 1.67. In 81 innings she has given up just one home run and has struck out 72 hitters.
Kelly Shuck has played in all but one of the Ravens’ 34 games and started all but three. She is hitting .271 with one home run and nine driven in. She has also been successful in stealing five out of six attempts.
In a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Cleveland State this past week, Butler sophomore Jason Jamerson had two hits in four trips to the plate. He scored two runs and drove in one. He also stole a base.
For the 28 games he’s played for the Bulldogs, the Pendleton Heights graduate is hitting .264. He has walked 14 times while striking out just 12 times.
Butler is 8-24 overall and has a 4-12 Horizon League slate.
