DAY ONE: 10 a.m. — It's gotta be the shoes
By Jessica Kerman
10 a.m.:
Sheila Worthman spent a week in Las Vegas and could not find gold sneakers.
“I looked everywhere, and I could not find a pair of casino shoes,” she said while she stood in line at the Club Centaur Rewards desk.
Worthman found her shoes, and much closer to her home in Cicero. While standing in line in front of the Hoosier Park Casino, Worthman had noticed the woman standing behind her wearing the perfect casino shoes.
Red 7s and fruit embellished the shoes, and the metallic gold reflected the flashing lights of the slot machines.
Mila Dison, also from Cicero, bought the shoes for $1 at a garage sale over the weekend before the opening.
Dison, with friends, arrived at the casino at 8:15 a.m. in preparation for the grand opening.
When Worthman saw the shoes, she could not resist. Dison said she got a good trade.
“I sold them to the lady for $20,” she said. “And she gave me her new Lands’ End tennis shoes.”
The women traded right there in the parking lot.
The shoes matched the attire of others in the casino. Comfort seemed to be the trend at the slots. Men and women sported T-shirts with Las Vegas themes, and some people dressed in Western attire, as if they were on the Vegas strip.
To match the shoes, Worthman was wearing a black shirt with silver and gold sequins spelling out “Las Vegas.”
By 10:30 a.m., Worthman’s trade wasn’t paying off.
“My luck’s not good,” she said, adding she had high hopes for the rest of the day.
