ALEXANDRIA — Candidates for queen of the Madison County 4-H Fair have been selected. All are Madison County residents. The pageant will be held Sunday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kiwanis Building on the Madison County Fairgrounds in Alexandria.
The candidates are:
Abbey Amos
Age: 16
School: Lapel High School
4-H Club: Happy Helpers/Pendleton Livestock
Parents: Frank and Michele Amos, Anderson
4-H projects, activities and awards: Bicycle Rodeo; arts and crafts; foods; sewing; fashion revue; consumer clothing; beef; sheep; wood; showmanship; Junior Leaders; president of Happy Helpers 4-H Club; champion in all of the previous projects (except foods); showed first Tunis Ewe at the Indiana State Fair.
Other youth activities: At Lapel High School, I participate in varsity cheerleading, band, track and cross country. I’m a member of the Student Council (and secretary of FFA Livestock Judging), (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Lapel City Youth Commission, Eli Lilly Explorers and the Youth Leadership Academy of Madison County.
Hobbies: Hanging out with friends, spending weekends at Lake Wawasee, working with livestock and showing sheep at national shows.
Future plans: I would like to attend a small Christian college to study elementary education.
Haleigh Dyan Allen
Age: 16
School: Frankton Jr./Sr. High School
4-H Club: County Mounties
Parents: Chuck Allen and Jodi Gilbert
4-H projects, activities and awards: Horse and pony (awards, belt buckle and other small prizes); fifth place at Indiana State Fair in reining; and ribbons in western pleasure, halter, trail, reining, costume class and bareback class.
Other youth activities: At Frankton Jr/Sr. High School, I’m a member of the choir (and have been since seventh grade). This year, I was also cheerleader for the basketball team.
Hobbies: Riding horses, camping, riding my four-wheeler; hanging out with friends; and skating.
Future plans: I might either become a veterinarian, because I like animals, or try to become a model (my cousin was a model for Calvin Klein and I would like to be a model.)
Rachel Clark
Age: 16
School: Elwood Community High School
4-H Club: Blue Ribbon Aces
Parents: Jim and Jennifer Savage
4-H projects, activities and awards: Scrapbooking (champion and reserve champion), foods, child development, cake decorating, collections, recycling, veterinary science and Junior Leaders (one year).
Other youth activities: Elwood Panther Marching Band; Elwood Panther Guard; school mascot; cheerleader; concert choir; select girls ensemble; wrestling manager; tennis; swimming; attend New Beginnings Fellowship Church; volunteer at concession stands at all Elwood High School sporting events; Latin Club; and member of Class Steering Committee.
Hobbies: Singing, scrapbooking, knitting, guard, and spending time with family and friends.
Future plans: I hope to go to Purdue University to pursue a career in veterinary science.
Olivia Katherine Kitts
Age: 17
School: Madison-Grant High School

4-H projects, activities and awards: Projects: swine, sheep, goats, foods, wildlife, gift wrapping, sewing, consumer clothing, veterinary science, child development, ceramics, food preservation and consumer swine; activities: Junior Leaders, treasurer, and treasurer, secretary and president of Blue Ribbon Aces; awards: grand champion gilt, reserve grand champion barrow junior swine showman, intermediate swine showman, junior goat showman, reserve junior sheep showman, reserve senior swine showman, reserve intermediate goat showman, intermediate goat showman senior, goat showman senior, sheep showman, 2007 supreme showman, grand champion veterinarian science, grand champion child development and first runner-up 2008 queen Contest.
Other youth activities: Harmony Christian Church Youth Group; Madison-Grant varsity cheerleading (captain); Madison-Grant Argyles and Gals; Class of 2010 vice president; Science Club; Spanish Club (vice president); National Honor Society; Spanish National Honor Society; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Girls’ Track team; MG Xtreme Dance team; member, National Junior Swine Association; and church song leader.
Hobbies: Raising and showing livestock, reading, studying the Spanish language, singing, dancing and baking.
Future plans: After graduating from Madison-Grant High School in 2010, I plan to attend Taylor University and major in Spanish and English, with a minor in missions. Having taken a trip to Honduras this past spring, I have realized that my dream of calling is to teach children of Central and South America and to spread God’s Word to all of the people there as well.
Erica Martin
Age: 16
School: Martin Academy (home-schooled)
4-H Club: Fur and Feathers, Moonlight Llamas, Rangers, Junior Leaders and Creation Corner
Parents: Ron and Brenda Martin
4-H projects, activities and awards: Projects: sewing wearables, wearable arts, fashion review, fine arts, photography, rabbits, poultry, pigeons, llama and horse; activities: Share the Fun, projects with Junior Leaders, cookout fundraisers and doing a county fair at a nursing home with other members of one of my clubs; awards: top herdsman; best four-class rabbit; grand champion in fashion review; several poultry, rabbit, pigeon and llama classes, including poster; champion in showmanship in rabbits, poultry, pigeons and llamas; blue honor in photography and in rabbit ambassador at the Indiana State Fair. Recently, I won the county non-musical Share The Fun contest and placed second in area.
Other youth activities: Participated in six plays, with my homeschool thespian group, with plans to be in two more next year. I have danced since I was 3 and perform yearly recitals as well as perform at Christmas at two nursing homes. I have helped with activities at two nursing homes, such as playing games, singing, serving desserts and decorating their areas. I have performed with show choir at a festival in Yorktown, in downtown Anderson and at Mainstage during Christmas. I also do community projects with Junior Leaders.
Hobbies: Dancing, singing, acting, 4-H, piano, guitar, drawing, running and swimming.
Future plans: My hope is to one day work at the Indianapolis Zoo with the dolphins and walruses. Actually, I would love to work with any of the animals, but my love has always been with dolphins and walruses. I would also like to teach dance, either as a second job or full-time, should working with sea creatures not work out right away. I love children as well and teaching dance would fulfill that love, too.
Jessica R. Means
Age: 17
School: Frankton High School
4-H Club: Frankton Ag

4-H projects, activities and awards: One year in Fine Arts (blue honors); one year of swine (seventh place); eight completed years in cake decorating (all blue honors); three reserve champions; four champions and of those three were grand champions; last year, I received best exhibit award for best cake at the Indiana State Fair. I also received best indoor project award and the Executive Director’s award by Cindy Hoye, along with a $1,500 prize, presented at the opening ceremony at the 2008 Indiana State Fair. As a result of this award, I was asked to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Fair, along with Gov. Daniels, the 2008 Indiana State Fair Queen, Indianapolis Mayor Ballard and U.S. Rep. Pence.
Other youth activities: Ten-year volleyball career (five with the YMCA Youth League in Elwood), two in junior high and three in high school; JV captain (for two years) and two years varsity letterman; manager of boys’ basketball two years; French Club two years (one as treasurer and one as president); French Honor Society for two years; class offices: one year as representative, three years as treasurer; member of prom committee and National Honor Society; and five years as a volunteer to work with the Frankton Heritage Days Festival and Parade.
Hobbies: Volleyball; hanging out with friends; cruisin’ the “L”; playing XBox Live; and baking and helping decorate cakes with my sister.
Future plans: I’m on track to graduate with an honors diploma from Frankton High School. Following graduation, I want to go to college and major in teaching. I want to teach at the high school level, but have not yet decided what subject, because I like them all. I would also like to co-own a bakery with my sister.
Lauren Brooke Miller
Age: 17
School: Alexandria/Monroe High School
4-H Club: Happy Helpers

4-H projects, activities and awards: Beef (multiple beef class winners), sheep, scrapbooking, beef showmanship; sheep showmanship; heifer (grand champion 2007), Junior Leaders; member, National Beef Association.
Other youth activities: Alexandria High School, Youth Leadership Academy; Scholar of Character of Madison County; Athlete of Character of Madison County; class officer for four years; member of student council for four years; TATU; Voice; Quiz Bowl (two years); Spanish Club; National Honor Society; Munciana Volleyball Club for five years; part-time at Kleenco; Alexandria Varsity Volleyball for four years (member, all-state first team 2008); All County and County MVP, 2008; All-County for two years; All Madison County Tourney Team for two years; tourney MVP, 2008; All-CIC for two years (team MVP, 2008); varsity softball and varsity tennis.
Hobbies: Volleyball, shopping, volunteering for local organizations, tennis, reading, traveling and 4-H projects.
Future plans: Pursue a career in the medical or law fields, at an undecided university, and possibly play volleyball. One day, I would like to own my own boutique, and start a shoe charity for those in need.
