On Dec. 12, the Madison-Grant High School boys basketball team honored members of the 1949 Summitville “Goblins” High School boys basketball team on our 60th anniversary of getting to the IHSAA semistate tournament. The evening was filled with much reminiscing and memories at a chicken and noodle dinner hosted by the school.
Then, between the junior varsity and varsity basketball games, eight of the 10 players, along with a family representative of the two departed team members, were recognized publicly and held basketballs from that year’s IHSAA tournaments. The old trophies, from approximately 1946 to 1950, were also displayed during this recognition. Paul Bradford, who was our coach at that time, spoke for the team members assembled.
On behalf of the 1949 team, I would like to personally thank Paul Bradford for organizing this assembly of players; to Madison-Grant principal Phil Nikirk for hosting the evening; to Wendy Barr for bringing the varied trophies and basketballs to display and also for the commemorative T-shirts we were given; to M-G coach Chris Smedley, and the boys basketball teams, for allowing time between the games to be honored, and also to the fans of both Madison-Grant and Elwood high schools for their warm reception and appreciation of our team.
The evening is one that will not soon be forgotten and long be remembered with fond memories and gratitude by all eight of us. Thank you.
