While it may not have shown on the scoreboard, Anderson coach Tom Slyder saw several encouraging signs in the second half of Monday’s 95-60 exhibition loss to IUPUI.

The Ravens cut back on turnovers, only committed two fouls and were able to keep pace at times with their Division I counterparts in the game at Conseco Fieldhouse.

“I thought we showed more poise in the second half,” Slyder said. “When you only turn it over five times, you are going to get shots. We handled their pressure a lot better.”

Anderson committed 17 turnovers in the first half and allowed the Jaguars to get 12 offensive rebounds as IUPUI built a 47-30 lead.

Those numbers shrank to five turnovers and four offensive rebounds allowed after halftime.

“We are real encouraged with our young guys and how they adjusted in the second half,” Slyder said.

Both teams were chosen to finish third in their respective preseason conference polls, but Slyder pointed out some of the inequities between Division I and Division III programs.

“We practiced 10 times and they probably practiced 15 times, got two hours a week all fall and they have better players than us,” Slyder said. “I think we have a lot to be excited about.”

Anderson kept it close early in the game, trailing only 15-12 with eight minutes gone by thanks to a couple of three-pointers by Ty Riddle and some inside buckets from Andrew Jones.

IUPUI pulled away in the middle of the first half, using a 19-2 run. The Ravens couldn’t stop Robert Glenn inside. The preseason first-team all-Summit league selection scored on a variety of drives to the basket as well as off offensive rebounds. For the game, Glenn had 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting.

“Glenn was really good around the basket,” Slyder said. “He was quick on his feet. We have no one that can match up with him.”

Jones led the Ravens with 17 points while Riddle contributed 12 points and five steals. Gabe Miller added 10 points and seven rebounds.

With the game played at Conseco, three Anderson players got to play in their hometown. That included freshman point guard Phil Hogan. The Pike High School product had seven points and four assists in 33 minutes of action.

“He made some turnovers in the first half, but in the second half he played with one turnover,” Slyder said. “He adjusted against a pretty good program.”

Miller said it was a fun atmosphere getting to play in the Indiana Pacers’ arena. The game also gave the Ravens a better idea of what to work on before the regular season opens Nov. 16 at Alma College.
