Anderson Hockett got off to a fast start Friday at the John Miles Memorial Holiday Tournament in Muncie.

The annual event was renamed in honor of the late Hockett skipper and is being played outside Anderson for the first time this year.

Hockett opened play with a 3-2 victory against Bristol on Friday morning and followed that up with a 16-5 shellacking of Carmel in the afternoon.

The round-robin event continues today, with Anderson’s Post 127 facing off against Mishawaka at 10 a.m.

Hockett closes out the tournament Sunday with games against Jay-Randolph at 1 p.m. and Muncie at 6 p.m.

Lapel’s Ryan Scott got the win on the mound in the opener, and Liberty Christian’s Tim Zeigler picked up the save.

Highland’s Mr. Baseball candidate Trevor Humes got the win in Game 2, and Riley Dillon closed out the rout in relief.

“I didn’t have my best stuff,” Humes said by cell phone after the win. “I just pitched and got ground balls. Pretty much got outs when I needed them.”

Hockett had its full roster available with the exception of Elwood’s Jacob Hartman.

However, manager Travis Keesling was on a trip planned before the program was revived and he agreed to take over.

In his place where former Pendleton Heights stars Daren Hardesty and Trevor Keesling, Travis’ brother.

Humes said there was a noticeable difference between the two Keeslings.

“(Trevor) was definitely more stern,” he said and then laughed. “It wasn’t the same loose Hockett baseball. Still, we took care of business and won some games.”
