Watchers to host Riverfest ‘08
The White River Watchers will host Riverfest ’08 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Edgewater Park on East 10th Street, near construction of the new pedestrian bridge in downtown Anderson. Canoe Country of Daleville will supply canoes and kayaks for the public to paddle from Edgewater Park to Riverbend Park. Participants under 18 years of age will need to be accompanied by an adult or have a release signed by an adult. Canoes that usually rent for $25 will rent for $10 each on the day of the festival, and kayak trips will cost $5 each. It is recommended that all participants wear sturdy shoes that can get wet. Block party today at West Anderson
The West Anderson Church of God will host a Community Block Party for the residents of Edgewood and Anderson from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. This event is free to the community and is a gift of the church to their neighbors. “We value our community and want to show them how much we care about them,” said Pastor Jared Fields. Dinner will begin to be served at 6:30 p.m. and will include lean hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cole slaw, potato salad and dessert. Activities for families will include games, door prizes and a bounce house. The Anderson Fire Department will be bringing out a fire truck. The West Anderson Church of God is located at 2205 Park Road just south of Nichol Avenue. More information about the event and the church can be found at www.westanderson.org.
Busch racing to help shelter dogs
Shelter dogs nationwide will be tuning into Allstate 400 on Sunday. To help raise awareness and funding for 4 million dogs in shelters and breed rescue organizations, NASCAR driver Kyle Busch has teamed up with Pedigree to create “Kyle’s Miles.” The program that has a goal of raising $100,000 for the Pedigree Adoption Drive Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides funding to animal shelters and breed rescues nationwide. Busch hopes to raise this money by asking NASCAR fans and dog lovers nationwide to sponsor each of the 10,473 miles in his races through October.
Anyone who sponsors miles is automatically entered into the sweepstakes to win a trip for two to Phoenix in November to meet Busch and attend the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 9. Those who’d like to enter the sweepstakes but not sponsor Kyle’s Miles can also do so at www.dogsrule.com
Operation Love party Saturday
Operation Love will host a Crime Watch block party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Walnut Street Park, 1800 block of Walnut Street, Anderson. Activities planned include a disc jockey and music by Mingo, free food, games, a moonwalk and prizes. There will be an Anderson Police Department K-9 demonstration and a fire truck from the Anderson Fire Department. For more information, call Anderson police Sgt. NASCAR racer in Anderson Saturday
Race fans in Anderson will have a unique opportunity to get close to an authentic NASCAR race car on Saturday at Wal-Mart, 2321 Charles St. A replica of the No. 27 Kleenex Ford Fusion, driven by Nationwide Series driver Brad Coleman, will make a pit stop on Saturday. The car will be at the store throughout the day. Brad Coleman driver hero cards and samples of Kleenex tissue will be handed out during the show car appearance. Fans can test their luck and driving skills competing against other virtual cars by taking a turn on a racing simulator, providing on-track virtual competition.
