Area residents have until July 5 to make reservations for a full-day tour of Abraham Lincoln sites in Springfield, Ill.
Sponsored by the Madison County Historical Society, the Aug. 11 trip will include visits to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Family Home and Lincoln’s tomb. The chartered, nonsmoking motor coach will depart from the southwest corner of Anderson’s Meijer’s Store on South Scatterfield Road at 7 a.m. Participants may park their cars there for the day.
The first stop in Springfield will be shortly after 11 a.m. (10 a.m. Illinois time) at the Presidential Library and Museum. Lunch may be purchased there. This site contains the largest collection of documentary material related to the life of Lincoln. The world-class facility blends 21st-century technology with the 19th-century world of Lincoln. Experiences include a visit to the rustic Indiana Lincoln cabin, a portrayal of the horrors of slavery and an interpretation of the 1860 presidential election. After a meeting with Mary Todd Lincoln and hearing the gossip of slaves in the White House kitchen, visitors will join the Lincolns in their box at Ford’s Theatre.
Leaving the museum at 2 p.m., the group will move on to the Lincoln family home and then visit the monumental tomb, the final resting place of Abraham, Mary Todd and three of their sons.
The tour coach leaves for Anderson at 4 p.m. and stops for dinner at approximately 5:30 p.m. at a Baker’s Square restaurant in Champaign. Arrival time back in Anderson is by 10 p.m.
The cost of the tour is $70 for adults (16-61), $68 for seniors (62 and older) and $66 for children (5-15). It pays for everything except the meals. Make checks payable to MCHS and mail to Milton Otto, 708 Hendricks St., Anderson, IN 46016.
For more information, call Milton Otto, (765) 683-1526, or MCHS President Don Hunt, (765) 683-0052.
