Head Start taking applications for fall

Urban League of Madison County Head Start is accepting applications for the 2008-09 school year. Head Start is a free preschool program for 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children of low-income families.

Children who are age 3 on or before Aug. 1, 2008, and those up to kindergarten age are eligible. Children age 5 after Aug. 1, not eligible for kindergarten, are eligible for Head Start. Priority is given to children ages 4 and 5 before placing those who are 3. Preference may be given to children with special needs, a representative said in a press release.

Applications must be completed by parents or legal guardians at the Head Start office, 2010 Brentwood Drive (former location of Morgan-Fenner Elementary School), Anderson. Families are accepted into the program based on gross yearly income, number of household members and completion of required forms.

Applications are being taken 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate, income verification, insurance and Medicaid card, Social Security card, immunization record, food stamp card and, if employed, two most recent check stubs or a current W-2 wage and tax form.

For more information, call (765) 649-4291.
