Lapel commencement Saturday, May 31
Commencement for Lapel High School will be on Saturday, May 31, at 7 p.m. This will be the first graduation in the new high school. The graduating class of 1958 will also be recognized, according to Jerry Kemerly, principal.

NAACP seeks volunteers for annual banquet
The Madison County Branch of the NAACP is planning the B. Harry Beckham Freedom Fund Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. The banquet will be at the Days Inn, 5901 S. Scatterfield Road.
Volunteers are being sought to assist on the various banquet committees. Anyone interested in volunteering should call chairwoman Rosetta Minnefield at (765) 644-1876. Honorary co-chair is Mike Casuscelli, publisher of The Herald Bulletin.
Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Thomas Brown, pastor of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Indianapolis. This year’s theme is: “Political Action-Stand Up and Be Counted.”

Applications available for balloon festival
Booth applications are available for the White River Balloon Fest, to be held at the Anderson Municipal Airport on Aug. 1-3. The booth spaces are 20-by-20 for $100 with electric and water included with 220 electric $25 extra. Booths for food, crafts, commercial, antique, flea market and manufactured items are being accepted.

Frankton Legion plans Memorial Day Celebration
A Memorial Day Celebration hosted by the Frankton American Legion will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with a graveside service at the K of P-IOOF Cemetery in Frankton conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Team.
Immediately following the service a free broasted chicken luncheon will be held at the Frankton American Legion, 116 N. Washington St.
Members of the Indiana National Guard will be saluted. They and their families are encouraged to attend.

Wheel tax meeting Thursday
A public meeting regarding the proposed wheel tax and other tax alternatives will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Geater Community Center, 1611 Chase St., Anderson.
The meeting is sponsored by County Councilman John Bostic Jr.
