Scouting breakfast set for May 17
The 2008 Anderson Leadership Breakfast for Scouting will be held at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, May 17. This event promotes the 2008 fundraising campaign known as “Friends of Scouting.”
The event will take place at the Anderson Center for the Arts, 32 W. 10th St., Anderson. The Anderson Leadership Breakfast for Scouting is an annual event where guests are given the opportunity to hear from Anderson’s mayor about the direction of the city and the positive effects that Scouting is having in our communities. 
Fifteen volunteers and business leaders in the area will serve as chairmen and table hosts for this event. They will be inviting past and prospective supporters to attend the breakfast. The efforts of these individuals raise the necessary funds to continue offering a quality program to 1,000 Madison County families.

Foster parenting class on Monday
White’s Family Pre-Services will offer a pre-service training class for new foster parents.
The class will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Anderson Regional Office at 3320 S. Main St., Suite J.

Iwo Jima program to be held at APL>/b>
Marion “Frank” Walker, one of a very few living survivors of the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, will make a presentation of that battle at the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Some of the events of that battle, the deadliest battle in Marine Corps history, are related by Walker, who was part of the 5th Marine Division.
Learn of the flag-raising on Suribachi as Walker was one of only a few who made it to the top of the extinct volcano and continued throughout the rest of the campaign.
The purpose of this presentation is to help re-energize the historical value and to keep the public informed of the horrible conditions that are caused by war, a representative of the history group said in a press release.
School visitation at Liberty Christian
Liberty Christian School will hold schoolwide visitation days on Tuesday and again Thursday, May 15, from 8 to 10 a.m. There are currently spaces available for the 2008-09 school year. Prospective families are invited to school wide visitations at the Elementary Campus, 2025 Hillcrest Drive, or the Secondary Campus, 2323 Columbus Ave.
Parents may visit the classrooms on visitation days by contacting the elementary school office at (765) 644-7773, or the secondary school office at (765) 644-7774. Additional information about the school is available at www.libertyonline.org.
River Watchers to hold Shadyside Trail cleanup
The White River Watchers will sponsor a cleanup of the Shadyside Lake walking trail from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers need to meet at the covered bridge north of the bait shop at 10 a.m. Trash bags and gloves will be provided, along with lunch to all participants.
Sandi Patty to perform at UIndy
Sandi Patty, a top name in contemporary Christian music for nearly three decades, will perform Sunday at the University of Indianapolis.
The UIndy Concert Choir will join Patty for selected pieces during the matinee concert, which begins at 2:30 p.m. in the university’s Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave.
Tickets are $20 general, $15 for students and seniors, and are available through the box office, (317) 788-3251.


Free Clinton volunteer event Saturday

Campaign workers for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign invite other volunteers to join them on Saturday.
The group will meet at noon at Hillary Clinton Headquarters, 1007 Meridian St. in downtown Anderson, to do some door-to-door canvassing.
Then at 2 p.m., the campaign workers will be having hot dogs and drinks at the gazebo at Citizens Park, Ninth and Meridian streets, to show appreciation to the volunteers.
