Welfare information meeting scheduled Tuesday
A public meeting will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Auto Workers Local Union Hall, 29th Street and Madison Avenue, for those who have questions about the new welfare “modernization” system.
Indiana legislators will be on hand to help local residents understand the system. Those attending should bring their applications and rejection notices and will be allowed to share their stories at the meeting.
Parking is free.
The meeting is being sponsored by Indiana Alliance for Retired Persons, Madison County Triad and United Senior Action.
Lincoln author at AU on Tuesday
Anderson University will present “Lincoln the Lawyer: A Presentation by Brian Dirck” as a part of its Town and Gown series at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Reardon Auditorium lobby.
Dirck, associate professor of history at Anderson University, will present an overview of his book “Lincoln the Lawyer.” Dirck recently received the 2008 Benjamin Barondess Award, presented to leading scholars in his field by the Civil War Roundtable. In the book, insights are provided into Lincoln’s law practice and its influence on his political career, personality, and future presidency.

Town looking for new police reserves
The town of Chesterfield is looking for qualified candidates to be reserve police officers.
The candidates must be 21 years of age, with a clear criminal background, good driving record and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Those interested should pick up an application at the Chesterfield Police Department. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday.
Driver safety program offered to seniors
A driver safety program through Community Hospital Anderson will be held Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendance is required on both days.
Taught in a classroom of Community Anderson’s Education Center, 1923 N. Madison Ave., the course is designed to give seniors the confidence and skills to stay safe behind the wheel. This course is recommended for all senior citizens and covers new traffic laws and updated driving information important to seniors. Many insurance companies offer discounts if you attend this class.
This is an AARP-sponsored course with a minimal course fee. Call Betty Crum at (765) 298-2534 to register or for more information.
Speaking English meetings at library
Those who are new to the U.S. or learning to speak the language are invited to join the Conversational English Group at Anderson Public Library. There are two times to choose from. One group meets from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays, and the other group meets from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays. Classes meet in the Redbud Room on the third floor.
Those who are new to English can broaden their knowledge and comfort in speaking to others by using music and games, as well as household, school or business items to learn the new language — by listening, by doing and by repeating what you hear.

Women’s GOP club to meet May 4
The Spring Membership Luncheon of the Madison County Women’s Republican Club will be held on Sunday, May 4, at Edgewood Country Club.
Women are encouraged to come renew their membership and meet the candidates for the May primary. The greet the candidates will begin at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will begin at 1 p.m.
The buffet will be baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, tossed salad, roll and coffee, tea or soda.

Fundraiser for McCoy set for Wednesday
A fundraiser will be held for Brandon McCoy, Democratic candidate for county council at large, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Democrat Headquarters, 18 W. Eighth St., Anderson.
The menu includes Spanish hamburgers or hot dogs, potato chips, cole slaw, dessert and a drink for $5.

Bath and beauty sale at Community Hospital
Community Hospital Anderson’s Auxiliary will sell bath and beauty products from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the hospital’s Outpatient Lobby.
The bath and beauty sale is open to the public and benefits the many charitable sponsorships of the Auxiliary. For more information, call (765) 298-5100.
