Arbor Fest to be held Saturday
Anderson Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate its 14th annual Earth Day-Arbor Fest Saturday at Shadyside Memorial Park on North Broadway in Anderson. Earth Day Arbor-Fest is a community-wide event. The goal is to educate the public about the importance of trees in our urban environment.

Meeting scheduled to discuss new FSSA system
If any reader, relative or friend has lost Medicaid benefits or food stamps or the new Indiana Family and Social Services Administration system is confusing, a meeting is set for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the UAW Hall, 29th Street and Madison Ave., Anderson.
The meeting will be sponsored by Alliance for Retired Americans, Madison County TRIAD and United Senior Action. Those attending should bring applications and rejection notices.
Civil war group to meet Monday
The Madison County Historical Society Civil War Roundtable will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Madison County History Center, 15 W. 11th St.
Leland Franklin, from WHBU-AM 1240, will speak on his participation in Civil War re-enactments.
Benefit ride slated for May 17
Save the Madison County Humane Society Benefit Ride will be held on Saturday, May 17. The ride begins at the Madison County Humane Society (Crystal Street parking lot adjacent to the Humane Society) and ends at Wings Etc. Restaurant & Pub, 4776 S. Scatterfield Road.
Sign-in starts at 9 a.m., with the first bike out at 11:30 a.m. Tours will also be available of the Humane Society.
Cost is $15 per person and includes the ride, entertainment, prizes and food. The first 100 participants will receive a free T-shirt.
All proceeds will go to the Madison County Humane Society.

Planning meeting for parade set
The first planning committee meeting for the annual Anderson Midnight Parade will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266, 3210 Columbus Ave.
This meeting is not open to the general public. It is for the planning committee only.
Please note that parade participation applications will not be accepted at this meeting or any meeting prior to the June meetings. Do not call the post for information.
Further information regarding applications and deadlines will be published at a future date.
Lincoln author at AU on Tuesday
Anderson University will present “Lincoln the Lawyer: A Presentation by Brian Dirck” as a part of its Town and Gown series at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Reardon Auditorium lobby.
Dirck, associate professor of history at Anderson University, will present an overview of his book “Lincoln the Lawyer.” Dirck recently received the 2008 Benjamin Barondess Award, presented to leading scholars in his field by the Civil War Roundtable. In the book, insights are provided into Lincoln’s law practice and its influence on his political career, personality, and future presidency.

Town looking for new reserves
The town of Chesterfield is looking for qualified candidates to be reserve police officers.
The candidates must be 21 years of age, with a clear criminal background, good driving record and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Those interested should pick up an application at the Chesterfield Police Department. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday.
Speaking English meeting at library
Those who are new to the U.S. or learning to speak the language are invited to join the Conversational English Group at Anderson Public Library. There are two times to choose from. One group meets from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays, and the other group meets from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays. Classes meet in the Redbud Room on the third floor.
Those who are new to English can broaden their knowledge and comfort in speaking to others by using music and games, as well as household, school or business items to learn the new language — by listening, by doing and by repeating what you hear.

Women’s GOP club to meet May 4
The Spring Membership Luncheon of the Madison County Women’s Republican Club will be held on Sunday, May 4, at Edgewood Country Club.
Women are encouraged to come renew their membership and meet the candidates for the May primary. The greet the candidates will begin at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will begin at 1 p.m.
The buffet will be baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, tossed salad, roll and coffee, tea or soda.

Quilt Guild meeting set for Monday
The Evening Star Quilt Guild will meet 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Parlour Room of the East Side Church of God at Fifth Street and Coventry Drive in Anderson.
The speaker is Mary Jane Teeters-Eichacker, curator of social history for the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. Teeters-Eichacker will give a power point presentation showing quilts from the quilt collections of the Indiana State Museum.
Quilt entries for the Ultimate Guild Challenge are also due and voting for the top eight entries will be held during the meeting. All levels of quilters are encouraged to attend and the public is welcomed.
