3:20 p.m.: Achenbach pleads guilty but mentally ill in April shotgun slaying

ANDERSON — Michael Achenbach, charged with murder in the April shotgun slaying of his wife, pleaded guilty but mentally ill earlier today.

Achenbach will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in Madison Superior Court 1. He faces 45 to 65 years in prison for killing Cynthia M. Achenbach, 24, outside his home at 2024 Charles St. on Apr. 23.

Michael Achenbach is being held without bond.

Madison County Deputy Coroner Marian Dunnichay previously that an autopsy determined Cynthia suffered three shotgun wounds, two to the back of the head and another to her back.

“Any one of them could have been fatal,” Dunnichay previously said. “It was not point-blank, but it was at close range.”
