Carol Joyce Hoak

Carol Joyce Hoak, 71, of Anderson, died Nov. 15, 2008, at Saint John’s Medical Center.



She was born April 15, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Scott) Daniels, and had resided in Anderson since August 1969.



In 1975, she received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Anderson University and, in 1983, her M.A. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Ball State University.



She was employed as a preschool and primary teacher with Anderson Community Schools from 1977 to 2001. She was also part-time faculty in the School of Education at Anderson University from 1983 to 2001. Prior to 1977, she spent 10 years as a preschool teacher in Toledo, Ohio, and at Park Place Children’s Center in Anderson.



She was a member of Park Place Church of God, where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the choir and Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Anderson Kiwanis Club, The Salvation Army Advisory Board and numerous other professional organizations, including the Indiana and National Associations for the Education of Young Children, both the International and Indiana Reading Associations, the Anderson Reading Council, Childcare Center Development Task Force, Kindergarten Curriculum Committee for Anderson Community Schools and Early Childhood Development Committee for the State of Indiana. She attended and presented workshops on Parent Education in connection with various organizations.



Survivors include her husband, Duane Hoak, whom she married in June 1959 in Toledo, Ohio; two children, Michelle and husband Allen Pierce of Anderson and Michael Hoak of Chesterfield; her sister, Irene Thelma “Sue” Amstutz of Toledo, Ohio; six grandchildren, Logan (Stacey) Heerlein of Vancouver, Wash., Ronald (April) Groves, Ashley Pierce and Meaghan Pierce, all of Anderson and Katrina Hoak and Shaun Hoak, both of Muncie; two great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn Heerlein and Brody Heerlein; and several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dorothy (Scott) Daniels.



Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Park Place Church of God, 501 College Drive, Anderson, and officiated by Dr. David Markle, assisted by Dr. David Coolidge, the Rev. Don Collins and Dr. Fred Shively. Burial will take place at East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson.



Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, and one hour prior to the Wednesday service at the church.



Memorial contributions may be given to Park Place Children’s Center or to Anderson University.
