ORESTES -- A Fairmount man was hospitalized Tuesday morning after the van he was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer between Orestes and Elwood.

Nathan B. Spaulding, 29, Fairmount, stopped for a deer in the road while driving east on Indiana 28 east of County Road 400 West, Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said. A semitrailer following Spaulding’s van could not stop in time and hit the rear of Spaulding’s vehicle shortly after 7:30 a.m. The truck driver, Cindy L. Goslin, 44, of Newark, Ohio, was not hurt, Richardson said.

Spaulding was transported to Saint John’s Medical Center with head injuries, Richardson said. He was listed in good condition Tuesday evening.
