11:56 p.m.: UPDATE: Couple critical after crash

By Aleasha Sandley, Herald Bulletin Staff Writer

An Anderson couple was critically injured in a traffic accident Saturday when the motorcycle they were riding crashed head-on into an SUV.

Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson would not confirm the identities of the husband and wife, but a separate phone call to the Herald Bulletin sought information about a possible accident involving Anderson attorney Robert Cowles and his wife, Sally.

A spokeswoman for Methodist Hospital confirmed the Cowles were in critical condition there, but would not confirm they had been in a motorcycle accident.

Richardson said the couple were headed south on Ind. 13 near Interstate 69 at 6:01 p.m. on a 1979 Harley-Davidson when the vehicle in front of them turned right onto the interstate ramp. An oncoming 2005 Chevy Equinox driven by Angela Acker, of Pendleton, was turning left onto the same ramp and did not see the motorcycle before crossing into its lane of traffic.

The couple on the motorcycle was not believed to be wearing helmets and was ejected from the vehicle, Richardson said. They were airlifted to Methodist.

Acker had a slight injury to her forearm caused by an airbag and refused medical treatment. A 9-year-old girl in the backseat of the SUV was not injured.

In addition to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana State Police, Pendleton Police and fire, Ingalls EMS and Madison County Emergency Management responded to the scene.
