MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Fall Creek Township Historical Society will host an evening of presentations relating to some notorious “mysteries” in Henry County.
Catherine Winters, the 9-year-old daughter of a prominent dentist in New Castle, vanished while strolling along Broad Street in the middle of the day, March 20, 1913. Her distraught parents spent their lives and their fortune looking for their child.
The Henry County Historical Society has obtained a film made in 1913 by Dr. Winters appealing to the nation to help locate Catherine. The film was shown, much like a newsreel, in nickelodeons everywhere. Catherine was never found.
Much has been written about the case and many have speculated as to what might have become of her. There is interest in production of a movie about the case.
On Wednesday, at 7 p.m., Mary Ann Hughes and Norma Dishman of the Henry County Historical Society will be at the Middletown Historical Society to show the 1913 film and give a talk about the disappearance and answer, if they can, questions from the audience. DVDs of the 1913 film will be available for sale.
Also speaking will be Charlene Perry, a local author who has written three volumes of “Haunted Henry County.” Perry has investigated and written about reports of hauntings throughout the county. She will answer whatever questions the audience might have and will be signing her books for those who wish to purchase. Coincidentally, Perry lived in Catherine Winters’ home for some time.
