ALEXANDRIA — The school board approved Monday the suspension of a high school teacher. An explanation of the ruling is expected Tuesday.

Jan Mock, a physical education teacher at Alexandria-Monroe High School, will serve a five-week unpaid suspension through Nov. 2. The school board voted 3-1 in favor of the suspension. President Jeff Montgomery abstained because he said he did not attend a closed informational meeting.

Superintendent Jim Willey and some board members declined to comment on the decision and deferred questions to Séamus Boyce, an attorney for the school corporation.

Boyce said the board based its decision on information members gathered about “incidents that occurred.” He would not provide further details, but said his office would send a statement to media Tuesday.

Last week, the Alexandria Times-Tribune reported that the accusations of misconduct may stem from a recent trip to Germany. Mock is a supporter of the school district’s participation in the German American Partnership Program, a foreign exchange initiative between schools in the U.S. and Germany.

Mock was principal of Alexandria-Monroe Middle School until resigning in 2006 so she could return to teaching. She could not be reached for comment.

Board member Warren Brown voted against the suspension. “I voted what I believe was in the best interest of our community and the school corporation,” he said.

He declined to comment about Mock’s alleged misconduct.

“Ethically, I do not feel comfortable because it’s a personnel issue.”

In other Alexandria school news:

•The board voted to publish the proposed 2009 budget. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Alexandria-Monroe High School.

• Superintendent Jim Willey said the school district is considering the purchase of a propane-fueled school bus that is more efficient than diesel buses.
