YORKTOWN – An entire week of Active Aging events is planned in conjunction with this year’s Senior Games in east central Indiana.
The action will get under way with a 5K fun run/walk at 9 a.m. on Sept. 6 in Morrow’s Meadow in Yorktown.
An intergenerational fitness fair will follow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in LifeStream’s Transportation Center, and the day will end with competitive track events for adults 50 and older at 2 p.m. at Yorktown High School.
The fun walk/run and fitness fair are open to all ages and to all Active Aging Week participants. Cost is $5 for the fun walk/run and includes a T-shirt. Cost is $5 for an optional lunch at the fitness fair.
The fitness fair will include demonstrations such as Drums Alive, seated yoga, dance instruction, fitness equipment demonstrations, virtual gaming opportunities, Zumba lessons and more. Lunch will be served at noon, and WMDH AM & FM will have a live remote from 9 to 11 a.m.
Adults 50 and older who sign up for the full week of activities only pay $15 for all the events. The price includes the fun walk/run, a T-shirt, lunch, snacks at events, competitive events (there are extra fees for bowling and golf) and all of the fitness classes.
LifeStream is partnering with the Muncie and Anderson YMCAs for additional activities this year, including Zumba classes, aquatic programs and Silver Sneakers classes.
Activities throughout the week will include shuffleboard singles, practice time at Westminster Village on Monday as well as Silver Sneakers classes at the YM in Muncie and Hartford City and a dinner/dance at the Rangeline Center in Anderson.
Other activities include:
— Hydro fit class, deep water power class, Sneakers classes at the Muncie and Anderson YMCAs and 3-on-3 basketball on Tuesday
— Competitive shuffleboard, horseshoes and bocce ball at Mansfield Park and yoga stretch classes at the Anderson YMCA on Wednesday
— Yoga classes at the Community Center for Vital Aging in Muncie, Silver Sneakers at both Muncie and Anderson YMCAs and Zumba at the Muncie YMCA, bingo for mind fitness at Westminster Village, cycling at Prairie Creek Lake, bowling at Liberty Bowl in Muncie and a euchre tournament at the Forest Park Senior Center, all on Thursday
— Competitive golf, Silver Sneakers classes, competitive swimming and Drums Alive demonstrations and other events on Friday
“We wanted to change things a bit this year and open our events to a wider audience,” said Judi Ritter, vice president of planning and development. “We would like to see family members enjoy the activities together.”
