ANDERSON — An Anderson man was charged with neglect after his 15-month-old son was discovered wandering alone along a city street Friday night.

Prosecutors charged James L. Hagerman, 54, with neglect, a Class D felony punishable by six months to three years behind bars, and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor, after the toddler was found walking unattended in the 2300 block of Jefferson Street.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the charges:

A delivery truck driver spotted the boy near the intersection of 23rd and Jefferson streets, got out of his truck and picked up the child. When he couldn’t find any adult nearby looking for the boy, he called police.

Officers also couldn’t find any adult searching for the child, but as they looked, Hagerman, who lives about a block away, walked up to the scene.

Hagerman told officers the toddler must have gotten out of the home after other children left a door open. Hagerman admitted to having been drinking vodka, and a test later determined he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.16 percent.

The child was released into the custody of his mother, who was called from work to come to the scene.

Hagerman was being held on $5,000 bond late Monday and was arraigned on the charges earlier in the day.
