Noon UPDATE: Complaint could keep Dunnichay off Olympic team; hearing scheduled for today
A complaint has been filed that could keep Mary Beth Dunnichay of Elwood off the U.S. Olympic diving team.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Laura Wilkinson filed the complaint Tuesday night with the American Arbitration Association, in an attempt to gain a spot on the team. A hearing has been scheduled for today in Los Angeles.
According to Jen Lowery, spokeswoman for USA Diving, the hearing will be conducted sometime Friday morning, pacific time. She could not say whether a ruling was expected today.
Wilkinson and synchronized diving partner Jessica Livingston had a higher average score than the team of Dunnichay and Haley Ishimatsu at a training camp in Knoxville, Tenn. in the 10-meter platform event. Wilkinson-Livingston scored 329.88 and Dunnichay-Ishimatsu 327.32.
But a panel selected Dunnichay and Ishimatsu because it had the highest single score (346.98) of four rounds and a higher “projected competition score,” according to the complaint.
Wilkinson is already a member of the U.S. team in the individual platform, an event she won at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She asked that she and Livingston be placed on the team in the synchro event or at least compete again against Dunnichay and Ishimatsu.
“USA Diving stands behind our selection procedure, the selection process and the selectors that made that decision,” said Debbie Hesse, president and CEO of Indianapolis-based USA Diving.
Rosters must be submitted to Olympic organizers by Tuesday.
Wilkinson and Livingston beat Dunnichay and Ishimatsu by 10 points in an international meet May 10 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Ishimatsu has already earned a spot in Beijing in individual platform.
