The Associated Press

BEVERLY SHORES, Ind. — Crews have expanded the search for a 14-year-old Illinois boy who vanished while swimming with friends at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

DaVante Jackson of Chicago Heights, Ill., disappeared Sunday afternoon in Lake Michigan off Kemil Beach.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman Gene Davis said attempts to use sonar to find the boy failed on Monday.

Divers were searching as far as a quarter mile west from where Jackson was last seen. Helicopters from the Coast Guard and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department also have been used in the search about 15 miles east of Gary.

The boy’s friends told authorities they had struggled against the currents before Jackson disappeared. Waves were 2 to 3 feet at the time.
