Symphony and fireworks in the park

ANDERSON - Lisa and Roger Gilliam knew what they’d be doing Sunday evening. It was the same event they’d attended for the past four years, and they were excited to return.

Getting comfortable in a couple of camp chairs, the Gilliams sat back and waited for the music of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra to begin.

The fireworks would soon follow, and Roger would get that feeling he’d waited all year for.

The Gilliams were only two of over one thousand area residents who filled Shadyside Park on Sunday during the Anderson Symphony Orchestra’s Patriotic concert.

The fireworks and orchestra are close, Gilliam said, and that makes all the difference. “I like to feel it,” Roger said.

“We love music, period,” Lisa Gilliam said, “but I really like the fireworks.”

Sitting on a hill overlooking the memorial garden at Shadyside, the Gilliams had a great view for fireworks.

Nearby, Ashley, 11, and William, 8, Kincaid were sprawled out on a blanket with their cousin, 10-year-old Madison Wilson.

The kids were happy to listen to the symphony orchestra, but admitted that they were waiting for fireworks.

Their grandmother, Digna Whiteaker, sat beside her mother who was visiting from Honduras and said she didn’t want to miss the chance to attend the concert this year. “It’s really fun and it’s something patriotic for the family.”
