ANDERSON — A Muncie man wanted on charges of attempted murder in connection with an Anderson shooting in April was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Yusuf A. Fields, 35, was being held in Madison County Jail on $50,000 cash bond on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, attempted battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

The most serious charge, attempted murder, is punishable by 20 to 50 years in prison if convicted. It wasn’t known if Fields had an attorney.

According to a probable cause affidavit:

Officers were called to Speedway, 3801 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., shortly before 3 a.m. on Thursday, April 30. The mother of Fields’ child told officers she was with a male friend in a vehicle in the gas station’s parking lot when she noticed Fields pull up beside them.

The 34-year-old woman told police she saw Fields with a gun and instinctively ducked down. A bullet struck the car, shattering the glass in a driver’s side window. A bullet lodged in the vehicle’s door. The woman and her friend were not injured in the shooting.

The woman said she had had an on-again, off-again relationship with Fields for the past six years. Fields has a history of domestic violence against the woman, according to Muncie Police Department records cited in the affidavit.

Fields was arrested on the warrant shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday at the Madison County Jail. Details of his apprehension weren’t immediately available.
