NEW CASTLE — Henry County sheriff’s deputies were seeking a vehicle Monday that reportedly swerved in front of a car and caused a crash that killed a 9-year-old Chesterfield boy.

The boy, Anthony J. Roberts, died following the single-vehicle crash in Henry County on Sunday.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to 7100 block of West Indiana 38, between Raider and Kennard roads, shortly before 2 p.m. after the car was reportedly forced off the road.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene of severe head and internal injuries. When first responders arrived at the crash, Anthony’s father, Anthony S. Roberts, 44, Anderson, was performing CPR on the boy.

According to a police report, Anthony S. Roberts was driving a 1993 Buick LeSabre westbound on Ind. 38 when a white, eastbound vehicle passed another eastbound vehicle.

Roberts was forced to swerve off the road to avoid striking the white vehicle. Roberts and witnesses said the white vehicle was traveling at an “extremely high rate of speed,” according to the report.

Jacob J. Hart, 6, Indianapolis, was sitting in the front seat’s middle and also suffered head injuries. He was flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. His condition wasn’t available late Monday.

Roberts, the vehicle’s driver, suffered head and back injuries. Jeremy B. Hart, 36, Anderson, was sitting in the front passenger seat, and suffered head injuries. Kaitlyn D. Roberts, 12, Chesterfield, was in the back seat and suffered back and leg injuries. All three were taken to Henry County Hospital.

A fourth child, Nathan S. Hart, 13, was sitting in the back seat.

Beyond its color, the white vehicle was not identified in the police report. Sheriff’s deputies are searching for the white vehicle and are asking for the public’s help in finding the vehicle. Anyone with information should contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Department at (765) 521-7032.

Services for Anthony J. Roberts are 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St. Visitation is at 11:30 a.m. Thursday until time of services at the funeral home.

Anthony had just finished the third grade at Valley Grove School, and was in the Boy Scouts. He like riding his bike, spending time with his friends and playing video games.

Along with the sheriff’s deputies, New Castle paramedics, Shirley first responders, Cadiz and Kennard fire officials responded to the scene.
