The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Commission awarded $10,000 in scholarships on May 3 at its 19th awards luncheon held at the Days Inn.
Three outstanding students from Anderson Community Schools were selected based upon their applications receiving the highest points assessed by the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee.
Awards are based upon information submitted on the applications include: GPA, SAT score, honors and awards (school related), Citizenship Awards (church and community-related), financial need, and an essay of 500 words or more is required on the topic: “What is good citizenship?”
The recipients are as follows: Student Merit Award ($2,000) to Donielle Mari Burton, Highland High School. Burton is the daughter of Donald and Carmella Burton. She will attend Ball State University and has been admitted to the Honor’s College. She will major in actuarial science and minor in accounting. Burton’s GPA is 4.334 and her SAT scores were 1770.
Burton’s academic achievements include National Honor Society, Who’s Who Among Honor Student, Martin Luther King Award for Top Minority Students, United States Achievement Academy Minority Leadership Award, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Outstanding Students of America and Hoosier Excellence Scholar. She has received three academic varsity letters, attended the Indiana University Kelly School of Business 2005 Jr. Executive Institute, attended Illinois State 2006 Introduction to Actuarial Science, and attended Ohio University 2007 Junior Business Program.
Her activities include choir, varsity track, H (Sports) Club, volleyball, varsity soccer, member of Prom Committee and off-season volleyball team. She received six letters in sports and two in varsity choir.
Burton’s community service includes church children’s program, church nursery program, church youth ushers, treasurer of the Interact Rotary Club and vice president of Highland’s Scholars of Character. In 2004, she was a student ambassador to the People to People Student Ambassador to Europe. She has worked for IHOP and is currently employed by Vector Marketing as a sales associate.
Academic Achievement Award ($3,000) to Ashley McKinnis, Anderson High School. McKinnis has a GPA of 4.095 and an SAT score of 1590. She is the daughter of Juli Crosby of Emanuel, Kan. She is a member of Christ Temple Apostolic Church. She will attend Anderson University majoring in pre-med.
Distinguished Scholar Award ($5,000) to Dainyell Durr, Anderson High School. Durr is the daughter of Herbert and Marinette Boyd. She will attend Indiana State University majoring in pre-law. Her GPA is 4.168, SAT score 1600 and ACT score 21. She is a member of New Liberty Church Of God In Christ.
Community support is needed to continue this worthwhile and needed program to support the youth. Contributions can be made to the MLK Scholarship Fund in care of the Rev. Wayne Redding, 2030 W. 16th St., P.O. Box 2197, Anderson, IN 46016.
