Published May 12, 2008 12:06 am - ANDERSON — The city's Yard & Garden Recycling Center is now open and accepting clean leaves and grass — no paper, no bottles, no cans — at no charge.
12:07 a.m.: Yard & Garden Recycling Center is open two days a week
With warmer days in the forecast, the residents of Anderson are uncovering the spring landscape and removing last season’s leaves and limbs. The city’s Yard & Garden Recycling Center is now open and accepting clean leaves and grass — no paper, no bottles, no cans — at no charge.
Limbs and brush can also be picked up at a fee of $10 per pickup truck load (please keep free of trash as this must be screened out at an added expense). Yard wastes must be loose or in biodegradable bags.
The Yard and Garden Recycling Center also offers specials on high-quality mulch and compost. Leaf compost can also be used as organic mulch on the soil surface in place of peat moss or straw to control weeds and keep soil moist and friable.
Here are the prices: mulch $10/cubic yard; AA leaf compost $5/cubic yard; AAA leaf compost $10/cubic yard.
The city’s mulch is another way of recycling. Tree limbs and even small trees are brought to the center. They are ground twice by a tub grinder, and then screened to remove large pieces. Nothing else is added.
Compost is produced by a natural decomposition of leaves brought in from homes in the community. Heat is generated during the decomposition of the large piles, which kills insects and weed seeds. Nothing is added to enhance the product or hasten the process, a city representative said in a press release.
The Yard and Garden Recycling Center is located at the former Emge site, located at 2000 W. Eighth St., in Anderson. The center is open Tuesdays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed for lunch from 11 to 11:45 a.m.).
