ANDERSON — A woman pictured in a surveillance photo allegedly fraudulently using a credit card has been identified.
Madison County sheriff’s Detective Doug Beltz said he was inundated with tips after the photo of Victoria Slack, 21, Anderson, was published in Thursday’s editions of The Herald Bulletin.
“The public’s help was immensely helpful,” Beltz said Friday.
The detective said he received at least 50 calls about Slack’s identity. So many, in fact, Beltz said, if he had returned all of the messages, he wouldn’t have had time to track the woman down. When he came into work at 8 a.m. Thursday, there were already eight messages left on his telephone.
“Without the public’s help, it would have been extremely difficult to identify her,” Beltz said.
Investigators had been looking for the woman pictured in the surveillance photo since late April, when a rural Anderson resident lost his credit card in the parking lot of Lowe’s, 3335 Scatterfield Road. Beltz said that the woman, later identified as Slack, used the credit card to buy $1,400-worth of items and fuel in a seven-hour period, before the man’s bank put a freeze on the card.
Beltz said Slack admitted to using the credit card, but wasn’t arrested. He said he would forward paperwork to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office early next week for filing of possible charges and issuing an arrest warrant. He said he’s requesting that Class D felony counts of fraud and theft be filed against Slack. Each count is punishable by six months to three years. Beltz said another person will also likely be charged in connection with the case.
“It’s good to know the public will contact the police if they know someone is involved in a crime,” he said.
