BATTLE GROUND, Ind. — Police found a man dead after he held them at bay for several hours and exchanged gunfire with officers at a home near Lafayette.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley says officers from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department entered the house when they arrived about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday following a call from family members.

Riley says the man opened fire, slightly wounding one sheriff’s deputy. The officers were able to leave the house with the only other occupant.

Police heard a single gunshot about 12:45 a.m. as they attempted to communicate with the man. When officers entered the home about 5 a.m., they found the man dead.

The man’s identity has not yet been released.
