8:05 a.m.: Reward offered in horse shooting

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — The Humane Society of the United States is offering up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest in the fatal shooting of a horse on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

The 29-year-old horse, named Nikki, was euthanized Jan. 27 after authorities found it bleeding and unable to walk behind owner Cathy Troutt’s home in Franklin Township. No arrests have been made.

“She was a very sweet horse,” Troutt said. “I’m just hoping the reward might help somebody who has information come forward.”

Troutt said gunshots are fairly common in the semi-rural area near her home because of sportsmen who live in the area.

“There was about 10 shots,” she said. “We didn’t really think a whole lot of it (until finding the horse).”

Police interviewed several juveniles living near the area who own guns, but the youths denied any involvement with the horse’s shooting.
