Rugenstein said that she opened the business in Pendleton because when she moved to the area she walked around the town and liked the ambience. Pendleton merchants want downtown to become a destination showcasing the local shops. They have an ongoing sidewalk/landscaping project, active merchant's association and space open for new businesses.

At a glance

Pendleton is in the midst of a downtown landscaping project which includes new sidewalks and street lamps. The project has been broken down into three phases:

PHASE ONE

• A block north of Pendleton Avenue and State Street, along both sides of Pendleton Avenue.

• Completed two years ago.

• Cost about $60,000.

PHASE TWO

• A block south of Pendleton Avenue and State Street, along the east side of the Pendleton Avenue.

• Completed a year ago.

• Cost about $40,000.

PHASE THREE

• A block south of Pendleton Avenue and State Street, along the west side of Pendleton Avenue.

• This phase will begin when funding is available.
