ANDERSON, Ind. -- Thomas Jackson, a longtime youth mentor who started the group Youth Need Prime Time and harbored political ambitions, has died. Jackson was a youth pastor at Resurrection Temple Church and a General Motors Corp. retiree. In recent years, he also served as a Republican recount commissioner on local elections.....more>>

Justin Schneider: Lincoln Brooks trial, ACS survey and local high schools receive training equipment
Today, the trial of ex-Anderson Police Department officer Lincoln Brooks is set to begin today. Anderson Community Schools is preparing to launch a survey about the future of the district and what parents would like to see. Saint John’s Hospital and Central Indiana Orthopedics will donate training equipment to local high schools.

County fixes error on missed exemptions
ANDERSON — Ralph Wellons got a grand surprise when his tax bill arrived in the mail. Grand — as in $1,000. Wellons, who lives in Redbud Estates’ Camelot development southwest of 38th Street and Raible Avenue, got a property tax bill saying he owed $1,400. He’s paid about $400 in past years.

C.J. Boots casket Co. moves downtown
ANDERSON — In a 45-day whirlwind, the building at 516 Meridian St. transformed from an empty shell to a full-fledged casket manufacturing plant as Anderson company C.J. Boots Casket Co. moved into its new home. As company owner Chris Boots put it, “Moving a casket company is quite the undertaking.”

Council in favor of health insurance commission
ANDERSON — The City Council voted on Monday in favor of an ordinance that would create an Employee Health Commission that Councilman David Eicks said would make health insurance decisions more transparent.

County building to close, workers furloughed
The Madison County Government Center, or courthouse, is closing for two days over the next few weeks in response to the County Council’s decision to force employees to take unpaid time off.

Tax bill surprise: bills went up, not down
ANDERSON — John Hendrix was pleased in 2008 when his tax bill dropped by nearly $1,000 — but his luck quickly ran out. Hendrix recently received his new tax bill to find that the amount had jumped back up to its original 2007 bill. In 2008, Hendrix’s bill was $1,329. For 2009, the bill jumped to $2,226.

Vectren energy assistance program renewed

Justin Schneider: City council special meeting, property taxes, CJ Boots
Today, the Anderson City Council will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. to discuss the creation of an employee health review commission, as well as an ordinance to fix the salaries and benefits of meter readers and employees in the water and water pollution control departments. Some Madison County residents wonder why they are getting hit with higher property tax bills. And CJ Boots Casket Co. will open its new location in downtown Anderson.

Parks Department to slash 62.5 percent of budget
ANDERSON — In the midst of a city budget crisis, some departments have taken bigger hits than others. One such department, Parks and Recreation, has seen the biggest drop in funding for 2010 than any other city sector.

Reader complaints about the issue intensified over the past several weeks as the city laid off employees to adjust for falling tax revenues. These complaints spurred our efforts.
