ANDERSON­, Ind. — More vaccine against the H1N1 flu strain keeps arriving in Madison County, expanding the reach of public vaccinations that will begin Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Hoosier Park.

“We got more in today that will allow us to add another clinic that will probably be announced Thursday,” said Stephenie Grimes, public health coordinator for the Madison County Health Department. That clinic likely will be in Elwood, Grimes said.

“If we have vaccine that comes yet again next week, we will probably add another (clinic) in Anderson,” she said.

Grimes said 2,200 to 2,500 doses of vaccine against the virus commonly referred to as swine flu should be available for distribution Wednesday at Hoosier Park.

The clinic will be a drive-through format. Those needing shots will not exit vehicles. They will get paperwork at a first station. It will be checked at a second station, where the form of inoculation will be determined. Vaccine will be given at the third station.

“We’re really trying to discourage people who do not fit the risk groups from getting vaccinated,” Grimes said. “We’ll have adequate supplies later, but we really need to make sure those in the target groups get it.”

Those in the priority populations for the vaccine are:

-- Pregnant women.

-- Caregivers or household contacts of children younger than six months.

-- Children age 6 months to adults age 24.

-- Health care and emergency workers.

-- People 25 and older with pre-existing, chronic medical conditions.

Grimes said the Health Department also is urging people not to arrive at Hoosier Park too soon before the shots are to be given starting at 5 p.m. Law enforcement and Hoosier Park will be directing traffic and facilitating the expected crowd.

“We’re going to need time and space to get set up,” Grimes said. “It will cause more confusion if people are out there too early.”
