ANDERSON - A Delaware County man was killed in a car wreck Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly rear-ended another vehicle at the 5500 block of County Road 500 East.
Ronald Hendrickson, 54, of rural Delaware County, died from blunt force trauma to his head and neck after being ejected from his vehicle.
According to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson, Hendrickson and two passengers, Marty Reese and his son Daniel Reese of Muncie, were riding in a Chevrolet Nova outfitted with racing tires and a roll cage on the country road when they were approached from the rear by a Honda driven by 22-year-old Matthew Hanna of Anderson, the son of Madison County sheriff’s deputy Sam Hanna.
According to Richardson, the Nova driven by Hendrickson pulled to the side of the road and waved Hanna by. As Hanna passed the vehicle, the Nova allegedly rammed into the rear-end of his vehicle.
The Nova then veered off the road and flipped in a nearby field, ejecting Hendrickson and Daniel Reese, 23, from the vehicle.
Hanna was alert and uninjured when emergency responders from Richland Township Fire Department arrived on scene after getting the 911 call at 4:06 p.m. Wednesday.
Marty Reese, 48, was found inside the Nova, which had flipped upside down.
Richland Township Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Stigall said Marty Reese was initially trapped in the overturned vehicle but wiggled free. “He was pinned in there and he crawled out on his own against our advice and before we could get him stopped.”
Marty Reese was rushed to Community Hospital, where he remained Wednesday night being treated for non-life threatening lacerations and contusions.
Richland Township Fire Chief Brian Frank said Hendrickson was in full cardiac arrest at the scene and was transported to Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m.
Daniel Reese was transported by helicopter to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. Richardson said he was under observation at Wishard Wednesday with undetermined injuries. His status was not thought to be life-threatening.
Officials from the Madison County Emergency Management, Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Alexandria Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The accident remained under investigation as of Wednesday evening.
