Wind fanned the flames Sunday evening as firefighters from five departments battled a house fire at 1105 E. 400N in Richland Township.
Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department asked for mutual aid from Van Buren Township, Alexandria, Frankton and Chesterfield-Union Township about 7:40 p.m. Tankers set up a staging area at the former College Corner School, across the road from the frame house, which was fully engulfed in flames. According to Richland Fire Chief Bryan Frank, fire investigators said the probable cause was in the electrical box attached to the house.
The house is owned by Roger Doty and was occupied by his son, Steve Doty, who was not home at the time. Red Cross came to the scene later to provide assistance to Doty. Frank said the house was a total loss, estimating total damage about $80,000. There were no injuries, Frank said.
Most fire units left the scene about 10:15 p.m., but Richland Township remained on the scene until almost midnight.
Madison County Emergency Management Agency handled traffic assistance until 11:13 p.m.
