ALEXANDRIA — Three people were injured, and 11 others were left homeless, after fire swept through a mobile home on the town’s north side late Friday.

Alexandria firefighters were called to the single-wide mobile home at 1141 N. Park Ave., lot 4, at about 8:10 p.m., said Alexandria Fire Chief Bruce Waters.

Three residents — an adult woman and two children — suffered minor smoke- and fire-related injuries, he said. Their names and ages weren’t immediately available. All three were taken to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood, but their conditions were not available late Friday. Waters said their injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Waters said 14 people — two adults and 12 children — lived in the mobile home, located in a trailer park behind Pizza King, near the intersection of Indiana 9 and Indiana 28. The fire chief said 12 people were in the home when the fire broke out in a front bedroom.

The residents’ names were not available at the scene. It also wasn’t known if all the residents comprised a single family, or if more than one family was living in the home.

With so many people in the residence, Waters said he was thankful the situation wasn’t worse.

“We could have had a tragedy, but thank God (we didn’t),” he said.

Waters said firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. He said the fire was likely caused by a child playing with a lighter.

The structure was being consider a complete loss, Waters said. He estimated the structural loss at $20,000, and the contents at about $10,000. It wasn’t immediately known if the Red Cross was assisting the residents.

Firefighters were still at the scene at 9:30 p.m., putting out hot spots and pushing smoldering insulation from windows. Summitville firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene.
