ALEXANDRIA — All of the competitions at the Madison County 4-H Fair take weeks, months, or even years of preparation, but one contest is a little more unique than the rest.

ALEXANDRIA — Trying to keep a 1,000-pound cow from doing whatever it wants can be very tricky, especially in front of a judge and a large crowd. But that was the task of four contestants competing for the supreme showmanship prize at the Madison County 4-H Fair on Wednesday.

ALEXANDRIA — 4-H has always had a unique mix of young people involved with the program, and a major part of the secret to its success has been getting kids interested at an early age.

ALEXANDRIA — Cows took over the Madison County 4-H Fair Tuesday for the annual beef show. The show arena at the fairgrounds rang with the sound of cattle calls as young 4-H members walked, or dragged, their potential prize-winning cattle across the mulch-strewn floor.

ALEXANDRIA — A late evening downpour left the 4-H fairgrounds soggy on Sunday evening but did little to damper the spirits of the more than 200 people who arrived to watch the 2009 Madison County

ALEXANDRIA — Nine-year-old Guy Maynard walked up to the judging table inside the Farm Bureau 4-H Building in Alexandria Thursday morning and sat down.

Lisa Rinker was the Madison County 4-H Fair Queen in 1977. Patty Riggs was the queen in 1970.
Both Rinker and Riggs have gone from competing to coordinating.
